Rutgers gymnastics welcomes eight newcomers to the roster for the 2020 season. The Meet R Freshmen series continues with Julia Volpe from Pearland, Texas.
Name: Julia Volpe

One word to describe your Coach: Dedicated
Favorite Rutgers athlete, past or present: Devin and Jason McCourty
Major: Intending to major in Nursing
I chose my major because: I have always loved helping others and being a friendly face. I want to be able to help those going through rough times--both patients and families.
Favorite place to hang out on campus: Our locker room!
The person I most admire is and why: My mom because she has always pushed me to be my absolute best and has supported me through every single one of my decisions.
If I wasn’t playing (sport), I’d be: probably trying to open a bakery
Favorite professional sports team: New England Patriots
One word to describe myself on the field/court: Motivated
One word to describe myself off the field/court: Empathetic
Few people know that I: have four sisters
Person who had greatest influence on my athletics career: My club coaches
I started playing my sport because: I watched gymnastics in the Olympics and decided that it was something I wanted to do. I begged my mom to put me in classes for several weeks, and the rest is history.
I chose Rutgers because: It was a great opportunity for me both to continue my sport at the next level and to experience an entirely new environment. I was a fan of a change in location from my hometown, and the coaches and team environment were a huge draw for me.
Favorite cereal: Cap'n Crunch
The movie I have watched the most in my lifetime is: 10 Things I Hate About You
Favorite musician/group: Lizzo
The first song I knew all the words to is: "Love Story" by Taylor Swift
Rituals I have before, during or after a game are: Listening to music and focusing on taking deep breaths
Pets I had growing up were: I have had four dogs throughout growing up
My favorite Halloween costume growing up was: Princess Belle
The place in the world I would most like to visit is: Italy and Spain
My favorite teacher was: Ms. Hoefler, my senior year US government teacher
