May 25 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior back Gabby Provenzano was named a Scholar All-American by United Soccer Coaches. The co-captain also earned Scholar All-Region accolades from the organization for her outstanding work in academics.
Provenzano, a sports management major, adds a Second Team Scholar All-American nod to her list of accolades. The Sergeantsville, New Jersey, native claimed First Team Scholar All-East Region recognition as well. The three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, in 2020.
On the field this season, Provenzano claimed her first All-Region accolade, following a All-Big Ten First Team nod. She anchored a backline that posted seven shutouts, while holding all 16 opponents to just single-digit shots on goal. She started all 16 games on the year for a total of 62 career starts, playing every minute of match time for a total of 1550 minutes which included six overtime matches.
The senior back registered a goal and an assist as well for Rutgers, including the gamewinner in the 1-0 win at Purdue. Provenzano was tabbed a Big Ten All-Tournament selection, aiding the Scarlet Knights in two shutouts on Big Ten Regional weekend to advance RU to its second straight semifinal appearance. Additionally, she was named the program's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient this season.
It marks the third Scholar All-American in the last four seasons for Rutgers and second consecutive year a student-athlete was recognized, as former Scarlet Knights Amanda Visco and Casey Murphy earned the honor in 2019 and 2017, respectively.
Provenzano and the Scarlet Knights ended the 2020-21 season ranked No. 24 in the United Soccer Coaches final rankings. The team produced an overall record of 9-3-4, a Big Ten mark of 6-2-3, and an undefeated mark of 5-0 at home. Rutgers advanced to its second straight Big Ten semifinal and ninth straight NCAA Tournament.
With her additional year of eligibility, Provenzano will remain at Rutgers to compete for Fall 2021.
