Mason Wins 2022 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship with USWYNT

SANTA DOMINGO, DOMINCAN REPUBLIC – Freshman Emily Mason of Rutgers women's soccer captured the 2022 Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship with the U.S. Youth National Team (USWYNT). Mason started five of seven games for Team USA, scoring three goals and an assist. The defender, who was named to the Concacaf W U-20 Championship Best XI, aided the squad in seven straight shutouts en route to the title.
The defender claimed her second title with the U-20 team, having played in this championship game two years ago when the USA also defeated Mexico 4-1 to become the 2020 Concacaf champions. This year's championship marks a record seventh Concacaf title for this age group. As a member of the Team USA pool starting at the U-14 level, the Flemington, New Jersey, native now has a total of 13 caps for the U-20 USWYNT.
2022 CONCACAF CHAMPIONS
Starting the opening match against Nicaragua, the defender added her first point of the tournament with an assist in the 6-0 victory. Off the bench in the 7-0 win over Puerto Rico, Mason then added her first goal of the championship. Earning her second starting nod, Mason served as captain in the 7-0 victory over the Dominican Republic to finish atop Group E.
Moving to the Round of 16, Mason scored her second goal, helping lift the USA to a 14-0 win over Suriname. The 14 goals tied the record for the second-most goals ever scored by the USA in tournament history and tied the second-highest margin of victory. She then went on to score the game winner in the 6-0 win over Haiti, opening the match's scoring in the 8th minute, to push the USA to the semifinals.
Mason started the semifinal matchup with Puerto Rico, where the team triumphed 7-0 to qualify for the championship match. In the final, she earned her fifth start of the tournament in the 2-0 victory over Mexico for her second U-20 Concacaf title with the U.S.
SCARLET KNIGHTS IN THE STARS AND STRIPES
Mason was one of three Scarlet Knight in action for the U.S. national teams across the last two months. Former Rutgers goalkeeper Casey Murphy claimed the 2022 SheBelieves Cup title with the USWNT senior squad in February. Current goalkeeper Meagan McClelland joined the U-23 team for the 2022 Thorns Preseason Tournament from March 5-11.
MASON'S COLLEGIATE DEBUT
In her collegiate debut with the Scarlet Knights in 2021, Mason helped lead Rutgers to its first Big Ten Conference title for the program and University. Following a run to the Big Ten Tournament Championship game, the Scarlet Knights earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the College Cup for the second time and first since 2015.
The rookie defender started 18 of 25 games including all games of the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments. She posted four assists on the year, helping RU set program records for most goals (64) and assists (62) in a singles season as the team outscored opponents 64-17 on the year. Mason and the team posted 13 shutouts overall and five in the undefeated 10-0 league slate, maintaining a GAA of 0.67.
