Scarlet Knights claim Gold medal in 20-team international field
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Rutgers dance team won the ICU World Championships in the Team Cheer Freestyle Pom category on Friday, April 27. The Scarlet Knights defeated a field of 20 international squads to capture the Gold medal.
RU scored 615.5 points to finish ahead of second-place Japan (586.5) and third-place Mexico (580.0).
"We are so proud and honored to have been selected to represent Team USA among these incredible teams from around the world, spirit program head coach Christine Zoffinger. "This experience has been a once in a lifetime opportunity for our program and to be able to meet all of these athletes from around the world has been nothing short of amazing.
"Congratulations to Team Japan, Team Mexico, and all the other Pom teams, and special congratulations to our teammates in Hip Hop and Jazz for their incredible work. We're unbelievably happy and can't wait to bring this trophy and our gold medals back home to Rutgers."
Currently, the ICU is in a three-year provisional status with the International Olympic Committee to become a recognized sport in the Olympics. The World Championships in Orlando, which hosted athletes from over 70 of its 110 member nations last year, are similar to annual World Championships held for most other sports, and are part of the process needed for inclusion in the Olympic Games.
