PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers field hockey goalkeeper
Gianna Glatz was named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday. The rookie led Rutgers to two conference wins with back-to-back shutouts of Indiana and No. 19 Iowa.
Glatz backstopped Rutgers to consecutive shutout wins last weekend versus league foes, downing Indiana (2-0) and No. 19 Iowa (1-0). She made four saves in each contest without allowing a goal. Glatz now has been part of four shutouts on the season (three solo).
On the season, Glatz is second in the Big Ten with a 1.64 goals-against-average. She also boasts a .739 save percentage. She has started all 10 games since arriving on campus, playing in 94 percent of the minutes in goal this season.
Glatz's performance gave RU shutouts in consecutive conference games for the first time since 2000. She is the second Rutgers player to earn Freshman of the Week accolades this season, joining
Daphne Groothuis, who won the award twice. Rutgers has had four different players earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week Awards in the past two seasons.
Rutgers continues conference play this weekend, playing at No. 14 Northwestern Friday at 4 p.m. Eastern Time.Â
