Jan 23 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY – In the midst of playing three of four games on the road, Rutgers (12-9, 2-6) returns home to host Nebraska (14-8, 5-4) in a 7 p.m. tip-off Wednesday evening at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights are 6-0 this season when limiting foes to 59 points or less and 8-1 when shooting a better percentage than their opponent. The Huskers are 13-2 when scoring 70 or more points and 2-6 when held to under 70 points.
The first 500 fans in attendance on Wednesday will receive complimentary suit t-shirts to coincide with Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Week.
Rutgers is eighth nationally in rebounding (40.86), 9th in scoring defense (62.1), 13th in both offensive rebounding (13.67) and FG% defense (38.9) and 14th in turnover margin (4.1). The Scarlet Knights are among the top three in 12 Big Ten stat categories.
The game will be televised live on BTN with Brandon Gaudin calling the action and Stephen Bardo providing the commentary. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick as well as on Sirius/XM 81. Jerry Recco will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
It will mark the ninth meeting on the collegiate hardwood between Rutgers and Nebraska since 1999, with the Huskers leading 5-3. Last season, Corey Sanders grabbed his own rebound and deposited a put-back with one second remaining to lift RU to a 65-64 win at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights limited the Huskers to 34.8 percent (24-of-69) shooting to provide Steve Pikiell his initial Big Ten victory at the helm. RU is 2-1 at home in the series. Sanders is averaging 18.0 points in four career games against Nebraska.
Deshawn Freeman had his sixth double-double of the season and Sanders contributed 12 points, but Rutgers could not overcome its 33.3 percent shooting, in a 62-47 loss to No. 23/24 Michigan Sunday afternoon at the Crisler Center. The Scarlet Knights led early and drew even on the boards (33-33) in the first of three road games RU will play over four contests. Freeman registered 11 points and 11 rebounds. Eugene Omoruyi furthered the Rutgers attack with eight points. Eleven players saw action for the visitors, with six registering points.
Under sixth-year head coach Tim Miles, Nebraska dropped a hard-fought 64-59 decision at No. 13 Ohio State Monday night in a game that featured 11 lead changes. Junior guard James Palmer, Jr. posted a career-high 34 points to set a Value City Arena opponent individual scoring record. Despite the loss, the Huskers arrive having won seven of their past 10 contests and with two ranked victories this season. Nebraska leads the Big Ten and rank 23rd nationally in 3-point FG% defense (30.8.), while also ranking among the D-I leaders in blocks (16th, 5.7) and turnovers (24th, 11.2) per game.
