Rutgers Men's Track and Field Wins 2007 Metropolitan Championships

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's track and field team took first place at the 2007 Outdoor Metropolitan Championships Saturday, April 21, at the Bauer Track and Field Complex.
As hosts of the event, the men won with an overall team score of 220, with second-place Manhattan College coming in at 155.5 points. Southern Connecticut State (128.5), Fordham (88), and Stony Brook (53) completed the top five on the men's side in the ten-team field. The Scarlet Knights saw 28 top-five finishes on the day.
Individually, the men's team saw several strong performances across the board on the afternoon. Senior sprinter Marcel Coleman (Harrisburg, Pa.) took first place overall in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.66. Sophomore Trevor Brown (Lakewood, N.J.) finished sixth in 11.20, followed by freshman Zach Shands (Wyncote, Pa.) in seventh, clocking 11.25. In the 200-meter dash, senior Rob Waters (Bellmawr, N.J.) won the event with a time of 21.26. The Scarlet Knights swept the top three places, with Coleman taking second in 21.66 and freshman Nil-Amon Robertson (Plainfield, N.J.) taking third in 22.12. Shands finished sixth in 22.55.
Waters also won the 400-meters with a time of 47.88, and Robinson took fifth in 49.13. Senior Bill Hulbert (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) placed third overall in the men's 1,500-meter run, stopping the clock at 3:56.44. Junior Alex Palmentieri (Northfield, N.J.) took seventh in the 5,000 with his time of 15:40.11. Rutgers placed two runners in the top three in the 10,000 meters, as sophomore Brandon Smith (Colonia, N.J.) finished second and freshman Jayram Sataluri (Holmdel, N.J.) took third, with times of 32:56.40 and 33:13.77, respectively.
In the finals of the men's 110-meter hurdles, freshman Nick Crosta (Toms River, N.J.) took sixth in 16.46 and sophomore Tim Matlack (Little Silver, N.J.) was seventh in 16.63. The Scarlet Knights took four of the top five spots in the men's 400-meter hurdles, led by junior Jahmone Duhaney (Boonton, N.J.) in first place with a time of 52.11. Sophomore Steve Swern (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) took third in 52.96, freshman Ray Davis (Eatontown, N.J.) was fourth in 53.24, and sophomore Brian Sutherland (Edison, N.J.) was fifth in 53.56.
Senior Milo Schwab (Highland Park, N.J.) placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:48.63.
Rutgers also fared well in the relays, a first-place finish in both the 4x100 and 4x400-meters. In the 4x100, the team of Mike Demko (Hightstown, N.J.), Robertson, Coleman, and Waters won in 41.16. In the 4x400, the team of Waters, Swern, Duhaney, and Charles Simmons (Elizabeth, N.J.) won with a time of 3:16.10.
The men's 4x800-meter relay team of Jerry Boucicaut (Paterson, N.J.), Mike Crum (Andover, N.J.), Hulbert, and Palmentieri placed third in 7:51.23.
The Scarlet Knights had top finishers in the field events as well. Sophomore Nick Syzonenko (Randolph, N.J.) and senior Daryl Black (Voorhees, N.J.) tied for third in the high jump with marks of 1.95 meters. Junior Jamie Stanley (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and sophomore Brian Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.) tied for first place in the pole vault, clearing 4.60 meters. Freshman Matt Mancini (Cinnaminson, N.J.) took sixth with a mark of 4.30. In the men's long jump, Syzonenko took the top spot as he jumped 7.16 meters. Junior Val Sisti (Lincoln Park, N.J.) also placed in the long jump, taking fourth with a jump of 7.09 meters.
Freshman Dyvae Lopez (Trenton, N.J.) took second place in the triple jump, recording a mark of 14.61 meters. Senior Val Wyche (Hackensack, N.J.) placed fifth in the shut put, throwing 14.41 meters. Brandon Burkhardt (Dallas, Pa.) was fourth in the discus with a throw of 44.30 meters, while senior Ian Menewisch (Laurel Springs, N.J.) won the javelin at 60.42 meters. Crosta took third in the javelin, throwing 51.33 meters.
Next up for the men's team will be the prestigious Penn Relays, held Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28, on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa. RESULTS
