Marshall Takes Seventh in Long Jump at Pan American Games

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - In her first-ever Pan American Games, former Rutgers track and field standout and current volunteer assistant coach Shameka Marshall (Mizpah, N.J.) took seventh at the event, recording a jump of 6.26 meters.
Maurren Maggi of host Brazil won the event with a 6.84-meter performance. Marshall also recorded a jump of 5.32 in the competition.
Marshall, the school's record holder in both the indoor and outdoor long jump, is coming off of a stellar performance at the 2007 North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Championships Monday, July 16, in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Marshall earned a gold medal in the long jump competition with a leap of 20' 9 3/4". She was also a member of the silver-medal 4x100-meter squad, running the lead-off leg of the event.
The U.S. is one of the 32 member nations of the NACAC, and one of six regional athletics associations affiliated with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). A total of 26 nations were represented at the competition in San Salvador.
