Pondexter Earns WNBA Weekly Honor for Third Straight Week; Named a Reserve for WNBA All-Star Game

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Former Rutgers star Cappie Pondexter was named the WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week and a reserve for the 2009 WNBA All-Star game, it was announced by the league office Monday.
It marks the third consecutive week the Phoenix Mercury guard has earned weekly honors. In addition, the All-Star nod is the third for Pondexter.
Pondexter helped to lead the Mercury to their third straight 2-0 week, averaging 19 points, 11.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds on the week. The Chicago native set a franchise record for assists in a game, tying the second-highest single game total (Ticha Penicheiro, 16 twice and 15 once) in league history by dishing out 15 assists against the Monarchs on July 15. She added 12 points in the game for her second double-double of the season. Pondexter ended her week with a game-best 26 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in an overtime win over the Detroit Shock on July 18.
Pondexter is ranked second (20.3 ppg)in scoring among WNBA leaders, only 0.4 points behind teammate and All-Star backcourt mate Diana Taurasi. She is ranked first in assists (5.9 apg) this season. Pondexter is one of only two players (Becky Hammon) to be ranked in the top five of both categories.
The WNBA All-Star game will be held on Saturday, July 25 at Mohegan Sun in Uncaville, Conn. It will be televised nationally on ABC at 3:30 p.m.
