
Rutgers Men Place 7th at Badger Invitational

VERONA, Wisc. - Rutgers men's golf placed seventh with an 893 (298-295-300) total at the 14-team Badger Invitational, played Sunday through Tuesday at University Ridge Golf Course. Sophomore Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.) paced the Scarlet Knights, carding a 221 (74-75-72) to finish tied for 14th in the 74-player field.
Freshman Michael Howe (Temecula, Calif.) also performed well in the highly-competitive event. He finished tied for 24th with a 224 (77-71-76) effort on the 7,259-yard, par 72 course.
The tournament was contested under sunny skies on Tuesday, with temperatures in the 80's and winds gusting to 20 mph.
Seniors Doug Walters (Blairstown, N.J.) and Jonathan Renza (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) and freshman Ryan Rose (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) comprised the rest of the Rutgers scorecard. Walters (77-71-78) and Renza (72-78-76) placed tied for 33rd with 226 totals. Rose finished tied for 50th with a 230 (75-79-76).
South Carolina led wire-to-wire to win the 54-hole Invitational. The Gamecocks claimed the first two individual spots and the team shot an eight-under 856 (282-283-291), which ranked fifth on the all-time among Badger Invite 54-hole team marks.
USC's Caleb Sturgeon set the Badger Invitational 54-hole record with a 10-under par 206 (65-72-69). The score ranks third among University Ridge marks. Teammate Matthew NeSmith was second with a four-under par 212 (72-67-73).
Rutgers, under the leadership of head coach Rob Shutte, returns to the links Oct. 7-8 at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C.
