AMES, Iowa - (Jan. 17, 2014) - The Rutgers wrestling team was in a good position after seven bouts, tying No. 17/17 (USA Today-NWCA-AWN Division I Coaches Poll/InterMat) Iowa State at 13-13 with three bouts remaining. However, the Cyclones won the next three bouts by decision to ward off the upset, defeating RU, 22-13, Friday night at Hilton Coliseum.
The Scarlet Knights trailed 4-0 after the first bout, as sophomore Hayden Hrymack (Lincroft, N.J.) fell, 14-6, to No. 2/2/2 (AWN/InterMat/W.I.N.) Kyvan Gadson at 197 pounds, where the dual started.
But redshirt sophomore Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.), who entered the dual ranked No. NR/17/18, came up big late in the heavyweight bout, pinning Quean Smith of Iowa State in sudden victory to give Rutgers a 6-4 lead. Billy Smith escaped 10 seconds into the third period to tie it up at 1-1. Following a scoreless round thereafter, Smith took a shot 20 seconds into sudden victory, turning Quean Smith enough to earn the fall at the 7:28 mark. Smith has won his last six bouts.
After Iowa State took close, 3-2 wins at 125 and 133 pounds, Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa) shifted the momentum back to Rutgers side at 141 pounds. Dippery led, 6-2, over Gabe Moreno midway through the third period, earning back-to-back near falls early in the stanza. After a Moreno stall, Dippery continued to ride Moreno, getting him on his back for just long enough at the buzzer to earn a two-point near fall and give him a 9-2 advantage. With the riding time point (2:26), Dippery won by major decision to tie the dual, 10-10, at the intermission. Dippery has now won four consecutive bouts.
Rutgers and Iowa State traded the next two bouts, as Luke Goettl edged sophomore Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.), 6-5, to give his team a 13-10 lead. Theobold beat Goettl by a 12-4 major decision earlier this year.
Redshirt sophomore Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) again tied up the match, defeating Logan Molina, 5-4, with 2:30 of riding time at 157 pounds. From there, Iowa State pulled away, winning at 165, 174 and 184 pounds to cap a 22-13 win.
The Scarlet Knights drop to 0-2 this season against ranked opponents with the loss, as the Cyclones (7-2, 1-1 Big 12) snapped RU's four-match win streak.
Rutgers returns to action on Jan. 26 at No. 5/6 Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. The Scarlet Knights close their tough road stretch the following weekend at No. 21/27 Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa.
