PISCATAWAY, N.J. (June 4, 2017) - The USTFCCCA has named junior Christopher Mirabelli its Division I Men's Mid-Atlantic Field Athlete of the Year, announced Sunday. Mirabelli owns the sixth-best distance in the javelin heading into this week's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The Lumberton, New Jersey, native secured his spot at nationals with his third-place result of 69.20m (227' 0") last week at the East Regional in Lexington, Kentucky. Previously, Mirabelli defended his Big Ten title in the event with his throw of 75.17m (246' 7"). The toss just missed the Big Ten record of 75.23m (246' 10") set by Ohio State's Bill Stanley in 2013.
Mirabelli reset his school record in the javelin this season at the Penn Relays, when he added a toss of 76.67m (251' 6") to capture the Scarlet Knights' first Penn Relay's individual title since 2013. Mirabelli also captured the Metropolitan Championships crown in April with a throw of 76.20m (250'00").
Mirabelli attempts to secure First Team All-America status on Wednesday, June 7 at 8:45 p.m. ET at historic Hayward Field.
