Sophomore cards three-under-par 69 to close out action at OMNI Tucson National
TUCSON, Ariz. – Sophomore Tony Jiang carded a three-under-par 69 in the final round as Rutgers men's golf closed out action at the National Invitational Collegiate Golf Tournament (N.I.T.) Monday afternoon on the par-72, 7,262-yard Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National.
As a team, the Scarlet Knights finished 14th in the talented field with a 17-over-par 881 (294-289-298). UNLV captured the team title, followed by Arizona State and Arizona. In total, five programs in the tournament are ranked within the top-50 of the latest rankings by GolfStat.
"There were good scoring conditions all three rounds," said head coach Rob Shutte. "Like most tournaments, I thought there were a lot of positives and some things to correct, and with this first stroke play of the spring, it felt the same way. We did a lot of things well, but we shot ourselves in the foot too many times in those first couple of rounds."
Jiang climbed up 18 positions in his final 18 holes to finish tied for 47th in the field. Jiang produced three birdies on holes 2, 12 and 13, while his even golf on the other 15 holes gave him a three-under-par 69 in round three.

With round two suspended due to darkness on Sunday, the remaining two holes were played out Monday morning. Three Scarlet Knights produced even or under-par scorecards in round two, as freshman Oliver Whatley contributed a one-under-par 71 in his second round. The rookie had six birdies in the round, which included three consecutive birdies on holes six, seven and eight. Whatley finished the tournament -1 in par-three scoring.
Senior co-captain Toks Pedro and freshman Christopher Gotterup both contributed even 72's in round two. Pedro had three birdies and 13 pars in his second round, while Gotterup finished the round with two birdies on holes six and 10 along with 14 pars.
Rutgers returns to the links from March 12-13, when the Scarlet Knights compete at the Colleton River Collegiate in Bluffton, South Carolina.
