Scarlet Knights move on to Big Ten Championships next weekend in Baltimore
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rutgers men's golf closed out weekend action at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, hosted by Ohio State, on Sunday in Columbus. Freshman Christopher Gotterup finished tied for 34th to lead the Scarlet Knights during the three-round event.
As a team, RU finished 12th with a 905 (300-294-311). In a loaded field that featured four teams ranked within the Golfstat Top-50 and eight Big Ten programs, No. 42 Purdue captured the team title, followed by No. 13 Illinois and No. 40 Penn State.
"I'm proud of the way our guys responded in round two after our slow start in round one," said head coach Rob Shutte. "Obviously, we could have done better to close out the tournament, but it was good to see our three freshman in the lineup perform. Now we'll wait to see if we get some of our guys who are currently injured back in the lineup and continue to prepare for the Big Ten Championships."
After he produced a one-over-par 72 yesterday in round two, Gotterup finished with a six-over-par 77 in the final round of action to tie for 34th. Gotterup finished with three birdies during weekend action, including two during his impressive second round.
Senior Jack Panagos, who also carded a one-over-par 72 in the second round, tied for 39th after his six-over-par 77 in round three. Freshmen Oliver Whatley and Putt Sridama, along with senior Toks Pedro completed the teams scorecard.
Rutgers returns to the links from April 27-29 when it competes in the 2018 Big Ten Championships, held in Baltimore.
