May 13 | General
PISCATAWAY - Rutgers Athletics celebrated the achievements of its 137 student-athletes who will earn degrees in 2018 at the University's annual convocation ceremony, held Sunday afternoon at High Point Solutions Stadium. The graduates are welcomed into a family of Rutgers alumni more than 500,000 strong.
Rutgers University President Robert Barchi called the class of 2018 "the largest and most accomplished" in Rutgers history.
"You have earned the right to celebrate," Barchi said to the "stars" of the day. "Every one of you has successfully completed a rigorous course of study at Rutgers, one of the finest public universities in America."
Among the graduates was consensus 1995 first-team All-America tight end Marco Battaglia, who serves as the Scarlet Knights' Assistant Athletic Director for Development-Major Gifts. Battaglia earned a bachelor of science in labor and employment relations. Big Ten Conference postgraduate scholarship recipients Michael Rexrode and Addison Walkowiak, as well as Wayne Duke Postgraduate Scholarship recipient Emily Mills also earned their undergraduate degrees.
Dan Schulman, president and CEO of PayPal, served as commencement speaker and received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree
Since its founding in 1766, Rutgers has awarded 580,862 academic degrees. An estimated 18,132 graduates will receive degrees from Rutgers this year. They include approximately 11,670 baccalaureate degrees, 4,541 master's degrees, 1,919 doctorates (including professional doctorates), one specialist of education degree and one artistic diploma. This year's estimated graduate total is up from last year's total of 17,729.
It signaled the 252nd commencement "On the Banks." The State University of New Jersey, Rutgers is the nation's eighth oldest institution of higher learning and one of only nine colonial colleges established before the American Revolution.
