Gotterup cards four-under-par 68 during final round of play in Scottsdale
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Rutgers men's golf finished eighth with an 888 (293-299-297) at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, played on the Outlaw Course at the Desert Mountain Golf Club Saturday and Sunday in Scottsdale, Arizona. Sophomore Christopher Gotterup tied for 13th with a 219 (77-74-68) to lead the Scarlet Knights, highlighted by a four-under-par 68 in the final round on Sunday.
"It was great to see Chris perform the way he did to close out the tournament," said head coach Rob Shutte. "I thought overall there were some things that we can improve on as we continue with our spring season, but I'm proud of how the guys fought despite the quick turnaround from our last tournament."
Gotterup carded six birdies in his final 18 holes and fired off an eagle on hole 16. Gotterup also had two eagles during Saturday action, co-leading the field with three eagles throughout the tournament.
Junior Tony Jiang and sophomore Oliver Whatley just missed finishing within the top-30, as both tied for 32nd. Jiang finished with a three-round 224 (74-71-79), as his weekend included a one-under-par performance in the second round on Saturday with five birdies. Whatley (75-71-78=224) also came in under par in the second round with five birdies during Saturday action.
Sophomore Bobby Weise (72-83-74=229) and rookie Shayler Dance (71-85-77=233) rounded out the team scorecard, finishing tied-for-49th and tied-for-58th, respectively.
Rutgers returns to action from April 1-2 at the Redhawk Invitational in University Place, Washington.
