Men’s Golf Records Best Finish in Program History at 2019 Big Ten Championships

Gotterup, Dance card top-10 finishes to close out play in Philadelphia
FLOURTOWN, Pa. – Behind top-10 results from sophomore Christopher Gotterup and freshman Shayler Dance, Rutgers men's golf produced the best result at the Big Ten Championships in program history with its sixth-place finish on Sunday at the at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pennsylvania.
The Scarlet Knights shot up three spots on the team leaderboard courtesy of the second-lowest total of the final round, securing the best team result at the conference championships since it joined the Big Ten in 2015. RU's previous best showing at the historic tournament was a tied-for-eleventh finish in 2016.
"Today capped a huge week for the program," said head coach Rob Shutte. "Every year we just keep getting better and keep closing that gap between us and some of the best teams in the conference. With our core of young guys playing well along with the talent we have coming in, the building blocks for this program to succeed at the highest level are evident."
Gotterup (69-74-71: 214) was named to the 2019 All-Big Ten Championships Team – another first for the program – with his tied-for-fourth result. The CBA product saw his name at the top of the leaderboard at one point during the final round before coming in with a one-over-par 71. Gotterup had three birdies and 12 pars on Sunday and closed out the tournament first in par 4 scoring with an even 4.00 average.
Dance (75-78-66: 219), who tied for ninth, produced the best round of his collegiate career with a four-under-par 66 in the final round, tied for the lowest scorecard on Sunday. Dance had five birdies during his final 18 holes, as he finished with a tournament-high nine birdies over three days of action.
Sophomore Oliver Whatley (79-79-69: 227) also came in at under par on Sunday with his one-under-par 69. Whatley played bogey-free golf with a birdie on hole eight and 17 pars en route to a tied-for-42nd result. Junior Tony Jiang (71-86-74: 231) and sophomore Bobby Weise (76-85-78: 239) rounded out the team scorecard tied for 52nd and 65th, respectively.
Illinois collected its fifth consecutive team title after it shot a three-round score of 868 (287-303-278), followed by Purdue (282-309-282: 873) and Michigan State (291-304-288: 883). Illinois' Adrien Dumont de Chassart and Minnesota's Angus Flanagan were named co-champions with their three-round scores of 212.
