2019 NJSIAA state champion immediately eligible for 2019-20 campaign
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers wrestling head coach Scott Goodale and his staff added another piece to an impressive 2019 class, as 2019 NJSIAA state champion Sammy Alvarez signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to compete for the Scarlet Knights. Alvarez is immediately eligible for the 2019-20 season and will wrestle at either 125 or 133 pounds.
Alvarez, the No. 3 ranked recruit at his weight and No. 34 overall prospect in the class of 2019 according to FloWrestling, is a three-time state finalist and 2019 126-pound state champion for St. Joseph of Montvale. Alvarez used a takedown in sudden victory to capture his individual state title this past March, as he earned the Most Outstanding Wrestling award at the tournament.
The Garfield, New Jersey, native collected more than 80 victories during his scholastic career, which included an undefeated 27-0 campaign as a senior en route to his state title. Alvarez was also a four-time district and three-time region champion during his time in high school.
The addition of Alvarez bolsters and already impressive 2019 signing class ranked No. 4 in the country by FloWrestling. The group includes three additional 2019 NJSIAA state champions – JoJo Aragona, Robert Kanniard and Zach DelVecchio – as well as highly-regarded prospects Gerard Angelo, Devon Britton, Jackson Turley and Ryan Vulakh.
Rutgers is coming off an historic 2018-19 campaign which was capped by the program's first individual NCAA titles from Anthony Ashnault and Nick Suriano, as well as its first top-10 finish at the national tournament. Rutgers wrestled to a 12-6 dual record, which included wins over three ranked foes - No. 10 Wisconsin, No. 19 Princeton and No. 20 Purdue. RU returns five national qualifiers next season, including Suriano, who secured a 29-3 record to go along with his Big Ten and NCAA titles.
