Alexis Morris: Hungry Like The Wolf
Sep 23 | Women's Basketball
When Alexis Morris first arrived "On The Banks" in January, a few people weren't sure if she realized Rutgers was the home of the Scarlet Knights. Anyone who follows Morris on social media may have noticed the rising redshirt sophomore placing a wolf emoji in her posts. What many may not know though is that the wolf has a special meaning in that it is what she considers her spirit animal and the true traits of her position, the point guard.
"I call myself the alpha wolf," she explained. "The alpha wolf mentality is relentless, fearless and a leader. It has the mindset of the dominant personality. The alpha wolf takes control, takes the wheel, takes responsibility and just prevails. In hard times, they are the head, the lead, they run the pack. I feel like I was born with the mentality.
"The alpha wolf is the head of the team and in my position, I am the glue to the team."
Morris' adopted mindset has allowed her to learn that mentality cancels any struggles she faces and that adversity doesn't necessarily have to break you, but can give you the opportunity to learn and become a stronger person.
In sitting out the first two months of the upcoming season because of NCAA transfer rules, Morris understands that her current role is just as vital to the Scarlet Knights starting off strong for the 2019-20 season.
"I can be the best me in practice, I can be the best practice player, I can be the best scout; whatever the coaches need me to do," she noted. "If they need me to be a shooter, a point guard, post player, whatever they need me to in order to help my team be prepared. I'll stay extra with one of my teammates or put up extra shots with one of my teammates, because I'm willing to do whatever I need to do before I get on the court, so that we as a team are prepared. It's not about me, it's about the team."
Morris brings a highly impressive resume to Rutgers and is hoping she will add a few more pages of success during her Scarlet Knight career.
Scholastically, the Beaumont, Texas native was the No. 6 ranked guard and No. 18 ranked player overall by ESPN Hoopgurlz with an impressive list of accolades, including an appearance at the Jordan Brand Classic along with Naismith Trophy and McDonald's All-American recognition on her high school resume.
Prior to arriving at Rutgers, Morris played her freshman season at Baylor where she averaged 9.4 points, 3.4 assists, 2.9 rebounds and an impressive 46 percent effort from beyond the arc for a team that reached the NCAA Sweet 16.
"They are going to see a player that is definitely excited to play every game," she said in looking forward to donning the Scarlet Knight uniform. "I am going to give it my all every game and I am never going to leave anything on the court. I am going to show the Rutgers fans that I appreciate them and that we, the whole team, appreciate them. I'm going to be an energetic player, I'm always going to give it all and I'm going to do everything in my power to lead the team and win. I'm going to do everything I need to do, on and off the court."
"I'm so excited," she said of finally being able to take to the court in January. "I love this game more than anything. I'm ready to get back on the court."
Until January – she will stay hungry on the sidelines and in practice. However, when January rolls round, the wolf will be unleashed, but more importantly Morris will also be a Scarlet Knight ready to do battle.
