ARLINGTON, Texas – The Rutgers softball team fell short in its quest to take home the Boerner Invitational title on Sunday in a 3-2 loss to Kansas in the championship game.
The Scarlet Knights, who had dropped three games in round robin play, including a run-rule set back in their earlier contest with the Jayhawks, powered back with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded UTSA on Saturday afternoon to reach Sunday's championship contest.
Rutgers dropped to 6-8 on the year.
Â
- Graduate student Gabrielle Callaway went 2-for-3 with an RBI and led the team on the field with six putouts.
- Freshman Taylor Fawcett hit 1-for-2 with a home run that cut RU's deficit to a run in the top of the sixth and gave her a team-leading seventh run of the season.
- Kansas struck early with a two-run home run from the bat of Sydnee Ramsey in the Jayhawks first at-bat.
- The Scarlet Knights cut their deficit to one in the top of the third with a Gabrielle Callaway single to center that allowed Taylor Lane to score. Lane opened the inning with a walk to get on base.
- Another Jayhawk home run put Kansas back up by a pair of runs for a 3-2 edge in the bottom of the fourth. Madison Hirsch led off with a shot over the left field fence.
- Rutgers fought back to within a run for a second time off a Taylor Fawcett home run to left field in the top of the sixth. RU, however, managed only one other hit as the Jayhawks held on for the win.
The Rutgers softball team heads to Tampa, Fla for the USF Tournament on Feb. 28 – Mar. 1. The Scarlet Knights will meet up with Syracuse for a third time this season and take on host USF, as well as Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
