PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior
Tony Jiang and junior
Christopher Gotterup were named 2020 PING Division I Northeast All-Region, announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). This is Gotterup's third consecutive all-region accolade and Jiang's second, as Rutgers men's golf has now produced multiple all-region selections for the second straight season.
Three Scarlet Knights have combined for six PING all-region accolades under the guidance of head coach
Rob Shutte, as Jonathan Chang earned a spot on the list in 2014.
"We're incredibly proud of Chris and Tony for their play this year as they both produced school scoring records this season," Shutte said. "It's a great honor for Tony to be recognized as he begins his professional career on PGA Tour China this summer. Chris has established himself as one of the top individuals in the country and will continue to build off his standout campaign heading into summer play and the 2020 fall season."
Gotterup finished 2020 as the top ranked Big Ten individual and No. 23 nationally with his 70.39 adjusted scoring average. The Little Silver, New Jersey native also appeared in the final Arnold Palmer Cup rankings, a list recognizing the top individuals in the country, at No. 10 overall.
A 2019-20 Preseason All-Big Ten selection, Gotterup recorded three consecutive top 5 finishes to close out the 2019 fall campaign, which include an eight-shot win at the Fighting Irish Classic when he fired a 14-under par score of 199. Gotterup also tied for fifth place at the Quail Valley Collegiate with a 54-hole score of 205 (-11) during the impressive fall season.
Gotterup collected plenty of awards over the past few months, including the Co-Ben Hogan Award October Golfer of the Month, the 2019 Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA) Jerry Courville Sr. Player of the Year and the 2019 New Jersey State Golf Association (NJSGA) Amateur Player of the Year award.
Prior to the start of the spring season, Jiang claimed an individual title at the 2020 PGA Tour China Qualifying School event on Jan. 10, played at the Foison Golf Club in Guangzhou, China. Jiang produced a five-under-par 279 (66-71-69-73) to win the event, which earned Jiang full membership to compete on the PGA Tour China circuit through the 2020 calendar year.
Also a 2019-20 Preseason All-Big Ten selection, Jiang appeared in 35 tournaments and carded 100 rounds during his time with the Scarlet Knights, as he was named a 2019 PING Division I All-Region selection as a junior. This past fall, Jiang had three top 15 tournament finishes and seven rounds of under-par golf. In the spring, Jiang tied for fifth at the rain-shortened TPC Dorado Beach Collegiate in Puerto Rico after he fired off a four-under-par 68 in the first and only round of the tournament.
Coming off arguably one of the best seasons in program history, RU finished 86th out of the 294 Division I teams nationally, according to
GolfStat, and 79th in the country according to golfweek.com. The final
GolfStat ranking was the seventh-best team result in the Big Ten Conference, as Rutgers closed the regular season in the top-half of the league rankings for the first time since joining in 2014. The Scarlet Knights' 288.74 scoring average was a program record.
