PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 20, 2020) – Rutgers women's basketball has landed two players on the 2020 Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) end-of-year awards. Redshirt junior guard Arella Guirantes has been named to the All-Met First Team in Division I and junior wing Tekia Mack earned Second Team All-Met accolades.
The MBWA designations for the 2019-20 season are unique in that they encompass players from 71 Metropolitan area schools across Divisions I, II and III. Guirantes' First Team selection is Rutgers' 26th in the MBWA awards and Macks' Second Team honor represents the 14th of its kind in program history. Guirantes, a Second Team All-Met selection in 2018-19, is the first Rutgers' First Team pick since Kahleah Copper in 2016.
Guirantes was the 2019-20 Big Ten scoring champion and No. 9 ranked scorer in the nation with 20.6 points per game during a campaign that was lauded with All-America Honorable Mention accolades by the Associated Press, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. She was also named to the All-Big Ten First Team, just the third from Rutgers since joining the conference in 2014-15 and first to be selected unanimously.
Mack was one of just five selected to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team this season, along with an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention. She was Rutgers' leading rebounder with 7.0 per game, while adding a team-high 66 steals (2.1 per game) along with 26 blocked shots. She ranked 10th in the Big Ten in rebounding, fourth in steals and 19th in blocked shots. Mack posted four double-doubles this season on her way to averaging a career-high 11.5 points per contest.
