LEESBURG, Fla. – Play continued for the Rutgers softball team down at the Sleepy Hollow Softball Complex on Saturday. On day two, the Scarlet Knights dropped its doubleheader with Northwestern.
Northwestern 8, Rutgers 0
- Northwestern put up four runs on five hits in the bottom of the second and added a run in the fourth and another three in the fifth.
- Hannah Cady and Rachel Lewis both had RBI singles in the second to open up scoring. Meanwhile, Makenna Nelson brought home a pair of runs on a single to second.
- A double by Lewis in left center drove home Skyler Shellmyer from first in the bottom of the fourth.
- A single down the right-field line from Sydney Supple the fifth drove home another three runs for the Wildcats to round out game one scoring.
Northwestern 10, Rutgers 1
- Graduate student Gabrielle Callaway went 1-for-2 with an RBI for RU's lone score of the game.
- Freshman Kobie Hura posted her first career run in the bottom of the fifth on Callaway's single.
- Hura and sophomore Ashley Hitchcock were both 1-for-1 from the plate.
- Graduate student Izzy Berouty made her second start with Jaden Vickers pitching the final 3.0 inning with three strikeouts.
- Northwestern jumped out to a 5-0 lead in their first turn at the plate behind five hits. The bases were loaded for Morgan Newport to connect on a two RBI single down the left-field line for the Wildcats to get on the scoreboard. Nikki Cuchran followed with an RBI single thru the left side and Angela Zedak dropped in a two-RBI single to center.
- Pinch runner Sammy Stanley added Northwestern's first run of the second inning reaching home after an error after stealing third. Danielle Williams with the next at bat put the Wildcats up 7-0 with a two-out triple to right center.
- A double from Makenna Nelson and single from Chuchran added another three Northwestern runs in the third.
- Rutgers thwarted the shutout in the fifth. Kobie Hura reached on base with a single to center and three batters later was brought home by Gabrielle Callaway's single to first. The Scarlet Knights looked at add another but Payton Lincavage was tagged out trying to score on the throw from the Wildcat first baseman.
The Florida weekend continues with a doubleheader against Purdue on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
