GLADEWATER, Texas. – Rising sophomore Rhett Sellers earned a trip to the 2021 U.S. Amateur Championship after he won the USGA Tempest qualifier on Wednesday in Gladewater, Texas. The Dallas native used a scorching seven-under-par 65 in the second round – tied for a course record – to force a four-way playoff. Sellers then capped the afternoon with a birdie on the first playoff hole to secure individual honors over University of Texas' Nick Costello and University of Oklahoma golfers Tucker Allen and Turner Hosch.
Sellers will now compete at the 2021 U.S. Amateur, held at the Oakmont Country Club from Aug. 9-15 in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
Sellers went bogey free in the second round with birdies on holes one, three, nine, 10, 13, 15 and 18 along with pars on the other 11 holes. On the first playoff hole, Sellers hit his tee shot within 240 yards of the pin, laid up in front of a water hazard and drilled an iron shot on the green to set up a birdie opportunity.
Sellers tied current PGA golfer Sam Burns' mark from two years prior with his seven-under-par 65, which included a 33 on the front nine and a 32 on the back. Sellers finished with a two-round, five-under-par 139 (74-65).
The true freshman wrapped up his first collegiate season with a 75.66 scoring average in 12 rounds across four tournaments, including a start at the 2021 Big Ten Championships, where he found himself within the top 10 of the leaderboard after the first round. Sellers produced three rounds of even or under par golf during the stroke play season and delivered a 5&4 victory over Nebraska's Gentry Scheve to help Rutgers to a head-to-head win over the Cornhuskers at the 2021 Big Ten Match Play Championship in Palm Coast, Florida.
