Wide receiver scored nine total touchdowns last season
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers football wide receiver Bo Melton was named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list released Thursday. The award recognizes the college football season's outstanding FBS receiver, regardless of position. Melton was also a member of the watch list in 2020.
Having played in all 45 games since 2017, Melton earned honorable mention All-Big Ten in the media and coaches' vote last season. He ranked third in the Big Ten with nine total touchdowns, fifth with six receiving touchdowns, fifth with 638 receiving yards, fifth with 235 combined kick return yards, sixth with 47 receptions, sixth with 54 points, seventh with 5.2 receptions per game and 10th with 104.67 all-purpose yards per game. That included being just one of three receivers in the Big Ten to rank in the top six in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
Melton totaled five games with at least 100 all-purpose yards, three games scoring multiple touchdowns and two games in triple-figure receiving yards. He registered a first down or touchdown on 27 catches, with 10 receptions picking up at least 20 yards.
A team captain, Melton rushed for two touchdowns and totaled 125 all-purpose yards (62 rushing, 45 receiving, 18 kickoff return) in the win at Maryland. That performance earned recognition to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll for versatility. In addition, Melton scored on a 58-yard punt return at Ohio State.
Melton is one of the three Scarlet Knights set to represent the program at Big Ten Media Day in Indianapolis on Friday.
Under the direction of head coach Greg Schiano, Rutgers matched its program high with three Big Ten victories in 2020. The Scarlet Knights had 14 players recognized in the All-Big Ten voting, the most for the program since joining the league. In addition, RU posted a team-best 26.7 points per game in a Big Ten season, a gain of 13.4 points per game from the previous season for the fourth-best improvement nationally. The defense collected 19 takeaways and led the conference with 7.8 tackles-for-loss, while the kick return units were one of four nationally with at least three kick return touchdowns. Academically, Rutgers saw 46 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten honors, a program high.
Rutgers opens the season Sept. 2 versus Temple at SHI Stadium in a game presented by PNC. Click here for information on season tickets.
