Aug 03 | Men's Golf
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Three members of Rutgers men's golf – freshman Weston Jones, junior Xavier Marcoux and sophomore Rhett Sellers – will compete at the 2021 U.S. Amateur from Aug. 9-15 in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. Opening rounds of the tournament will be contested at both Oakmont Country Club and the Longue View Club, while the top 64 will continue play at Oakmont CC, a 7,254-yard, par 70 venue.
Beginning next Wednesday, each round will broadcast on either Peacock or NBC Golf, with a full schedule found here.
All three Scarlet Knights earned spots at the prestigious event after claiming individual titles at their respective qualifying events. Jones won the USGA Plymouth qualifier, Marcoux captured the USGA Longmeadow qualifier title and Sellers earned top honors at the USGA Tempest qualifier. It marks the most entrants at the U.S. Amateur in a single year under head coach Rob Shutte and is also believed to be the most in program history.
A 2021 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar, Marcoux finished his sophomore season with a 74.95 scoring average across 20 rounds and seven tournaments. Marcoux registered a tied-for-16 result at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate on April 3 and opened the 2021 spring campaign with individuals wins over opponents from Maryland, Nebraska and Wisconsin at the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Palm Coast, Florida. Marcoux will compete at the 2021 U.S. Amateur Championship from Aug. 9-15 in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
Sellers wrapped up his first collegiate season with a 75.66 scoring average in 12 rounds across four tournaments, including a start at the 2021 Big Ten Championships, where he found himself within the top 10 of the leaderboard after the first round. Sellers produced three rounds of even or under par golf during the stroke play season and delivered a 5&4 victory over Nebraska's Gentry Scheve to help Rutgers to a head-to-head win over the Cornhuskers at the 2021 Big Ten Match Play Championship in Palm Coast, Florida.
Pegged as the top signee from the state of Massachusetts in the 2021 class by Junior Golf Magazine, Jones enjoyed a standout scholastic career at Lincoln-Sudbury, where he led his team to a 2019 state title as a junior with a two-under-par 70 to claim individual honors at the state championship. Most recently, Jones earned a two-person title at the Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship on May 12, as he and his teammate became the youngest winners in the tournament's history with their combined 13-under-par 131.
Under the guidance of Shutte, Rutgers wrapped up the season as the top ranked program in the Northeast Region – according to Golfstat – and No. 95 in the country after the 2021 spring campaign. Three RU student-athletes – Christopher Gotterup, Luke Wells and Oliver Whatley – landed on the PING All-Region team. The three all-region selections were the most in a single season in program history. In addition, seven student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors.
