PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers head football coach Greg Schiano announced that Mark Orphey and Drew Lascari were added to the defensive coaching staff. Orphey will coach cornerbacks, while Lascari will lead the safeties. Additionally, long-time assistant coach Bob Fraser will serve in an off-field position as senior advisor.
"We are thrilled to add two more passionate, dedicated and hard-working coaches to the Rutgers football family," said Schiano. "Mark is one of the young rising stars in our profession and we are excited for what he will bring to our staff. Drew is an elite coach and person, who will continue to add incredible value to our program."
Orphey (pronounced Or-Fay) comes to Rutgers after spending the 2021 season with National Runner-Up Alabama as senior defensive analyst. Prior to his stint in Tuscaloosa, Orphey was the secondary coach at Utah State from 2019 through 2020. He was the secondary coach at Montana State from 2017-18 and spent four seasons at South Carolina where he was a quality control coach (2013) and graduate assistant (2014-16). He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Texas Southern in 2010 and completed his master's degree in in health information technology from South Carolina in 2015.
Lascari is in his fifth season at Rutgers, spending the previous two years as a defensive assistant working with the defensive backs. He served as the quarterbacks coach for the final eight games of the 2019 season and joined the Scarlet Knights staff in 2018 as special teams quality control coach. A former head coach at the high school level, Lascari was at the helm of the Cardinal Mooney varsity team for three seasons. A native of Pequannock, New Jersey, Lascari began his coaching career at Don Bosco Prep where he spent six seasons with the Ironmen. He served as the offensive coordinator during his tenure, including coaching the wide receiver and quarterback positions. Lascari was a four-year letterwinner and Academic All-American at SUNY Cortland, where he earned a bachelor's degree in health science and a master's degree in sports management at Columbia University.
Fraser, who is in his fourth stint at Rutgers, was most recently linebackers coach. A 36-year coaching veteran in both college and the NFL, Fraser will continue to assist Schiano and the entire coaching staff as senior advisor. Part of seven Rutgers bowl appearances, he has spent 12 seasons "On the Banks," previously serving in various capacities, including defensive coordinator.
