CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Rutgers softball split day two of the Mizuno Invitational as the Scarlet Knights shutdown host UNC, 4-0, and fell in extra innings to 2023 Big South Champion Campbell, 3-2.
In the opening contest, Rutgers only needed two pitches to take the lead and shutout its ACC host behind a complete game shutout from Morgan Smith.
In game two, Rutgers held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth when the Camels tied the game and forced extra innings before plating two with two outs in the eighth for the win.

Rutgers 4, UNC 0
- Morgan Smith went the distance inside the circle for her first shutout of the 2024 campaign. She gave up five hits, none for extra bases, while fanning six Tar Heels. At the plate, the senior Scarlet Knight connected for her seventh home run of the year.
- Kyleigh Sand went 2-for-3 scoring the game's opening run, while Payton Lincavage was 2-for-4 including a double with a run scored.
- LA Matthews and Kayla Bock each had RBI doubles in the win with Leilani Chavez also adding an RBI hit.
- Jillian Anderson went 2-for-2 at the plate.
- Two pitches and it was a Scarlet Knight lead. Kyleigh Sand led off beating out the bunt and advanced to second on a throwing error trying to catch the speedy Knight at first. LA Matthews was the next batter and found center field for a double and scored Sand for the 1-0 Rutgers advantage.
- Rutgers added to its lead with a pair of doubles in the top of the fourth. Payton Lincavage doubled off the left field wall about a foot off the foul and two batters later scored on a Kayla Bock double down the right field line.
- Scoring continued in the fourth for a 3-0 Scarlet Knight edge. Leilani Chavez dropped the ball into left field to score pinch runner Kobie Hura.
- The Tar Heels would only have two hits the rest of the contest with Katie Wingert and Sand connecting to catch UNC trying to steal in the bottom of the fourth and Lincavage, Maddie Lawon and Matthews turning in a double play in the fifth.
- Morgan Smith padded the lead leading off the top of the seventh and taking the first pitch of the inning over the wall in right-center.
Campbell 3, Rutgers 2 (8)
- Kyleigh Sand and LA Matthews scored both RU runs.
- LA Matthews was 2-for-3Â while five other Scarlet Knights registered a hit.
- Mattie Boyd dropped to 7-3 going 7.2 innings giving up five hits and one earned run while striking out eight Camels.
- Katie Wingert broke up a scoreless stalemate in the top of the third. With two outs, LA Matthews reached on single to center and advanced to second on Morgan Smith's base hit thru the left side. Matthews then scored on Wingert's single to left.
- Rutgers had a chance at another run in the fifth but was denied by Campbell. Matthews singled to right field, but Leilani Chavez was caught trying to take the extra base to score and Matthews was called out trying to advance to second on the play to end the top half.
- The Camels evened the score in the bottom of the inning. Allyiah Swiney rounded the bases on a walk, sac bunt, ground out and single from Makayla McClain.
- The contest went into extra innings with RU getting run on the board in the top of the eighth. Morgan Smith batted the ball to the infield with the Camel's attempting to make the play at the plate. Kyleigh Sand was able to beat the tag and score for a 2-1 RU lead.
- Campbell, however, countered with two runs with two outs in the bottom half. The bases where loaded for the Camel's Swiney to hit a chopper to short. While RU was unable to make the play at second to end the inning, Lindsay Lumsden scored to tie and Madilyn Gillespie followed beating out the tag to end the game.
- Rutgers closes out the Mizuno Invitational on Sunday meeting Rider at 9 a.m.
