VERO BEACH, FL. – The Rutgers men's golf team closed out the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational on a high note, led by graduate student Jeffrey Zatorski's standout performance that helped the Scarlet Knights finish sixth at 19-under par (1,075).
Zatorski posted rounds of 68-71-68, demonstrating composure throughout the tournament and finishing with a total of 207, good for a top-eight finish. He reflected on how his strong start on the greens built momentum early in the event.
"I felt great going 9-under par," Zatorski said. "I didn't play that well in qualifying, but I knew my game was still there. Draining the 50-footer set the tone for the next two rounds and helped me stay patient, trusting that the birdies would come if I kept hitting good drives and short irons to give myself great chances."
Joining Zatorski in the top 25 was sophomore Argyle Downes, who posted rounds of 70-69-73, steadily improving each day. Downes showcased controlled play and continued to establish himself as a consistent contributor for the Scarlet Knights.
The performance capped off a productive fall stretch that saw steady growth across the roster. Rutgers' fall season featured several standout moments, including Zatorski's earlier recognition as Big Ten Golfer of the Week, highlighting the program's development.
"Finishing off with one more solid week, I know I have to keep doing what worked for me," Zatorski said. "Something that really stuck with me was a quote I heard — that the best teammates are the ones who get the job done for the team. Having that in my head pushed me to give my all and play with everything I had, not just for myself but for everyone on the team."
He also emphasized the importance of maintaining a calm mindset and not letting mistakes disrupt his rhythm.
"I tried not to overthink things," Zatorski said. "You're going to hit bad shots regardless, but not worrying about it is key. If you dwell on a mistake, you won't play well. I just focused on keeping things steady, aiming for solid or even mediocre shots rather than letting anything turn into a big miss."
With Quail Valley behind them, Rutgers now looks ahead to the Steelwood Collegiate, determined to maintain focus and finish the fall season strong.
