During the process you will be asked to answer a number of questions regarding your sport participation history. Answering theses questions helps the NCAA Eligibility Center staff identify any potential amateurism issues that may conflict with NCAA rules. If a rules violation is identified then the NCAA will impose a penalty based on the severity of the violation. Penalties include, but are not limited to, the repayment of impermissible monies received, sitting out a specified number of competition or, in rare cases, permanent ineligibility. The NCAA Eligibility Center staff will review the following in determining a college-bound student-athlete's amateurism status:
- Contracts with a professional team.
- Salary for participating in athletics.
- Prize money.
- Play with professionals.
- Tryouts, practice or competition with a professional team.
- Benefits from an agent or prospective agent.
- Agreement to be represented by an agent.
- Delayed initial full-time collegiate enrollment to participate in organized competition.
Before completing the amateurism certification process, we recommend that all prospective student-athletes review the Amateurism Certification Process Frequently Asked Questions as well as the Amateurism Certification for Initial Eligibility page on the NCAA's website.
Please use your sport's Director of Compliance as a resource through your amateurism certification process.
