Most sports are limited to seven (7) recruiting opportunities per prospective student-athlete, per year. Not more than 3 of those opportunities may be off-campus contacts. All contacts and evaluations are subject to recruiting calendar restrictions.
Evaluations that occur during the prospect's academic year count against the permissible number of recruiting opportunities. Outside his/her academic year, evaluations do not count against the annual number of recruiting opportunities. Contacts with a prospect count against the permissible number of total recruiting opportunities regardless of whether they take place during or outside the academic year.
Contacts
A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospective student-athlete and/or their parents, relatives or legal guardians and an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange or greeting.
Any face-to-face encounter that is prearranged is considered contact. For example, a staff member positioning themselves at the site of a prospect's competition and then having a face-to-face encounter is considered a contact.
In sports other than basketball and women's gymnastics, off-campus contacts shall not be made with an individual (including middle school students) before July 1 following the completion of a prospect's junior year in high school, or the opening day of classes of his/her senior year, whichever is earlier.
- In women's gymnastics, off-campus contacts shall not be made with an individual (including middle school students) before July 15 following the completion of a prospect's junior year in high school.
- In men's basketball, off-campus contacts shall not be made with an individual (including middle school students) before the opening day of his junior year in high school. Contacts that occur during a prospect's junior year during the recruiting periods other than the April recruiting period may occur only at his educational institution.
- In women's basketball, off-campus contacts shall not be made with an individual (including middle school students) before September 1 at the beginning of her junior year in high school. Contacts that occur during a prospect's junior year may occur only at her educational institution.
Contacting Transfer Student-Athletes
Athletics staff members and boosters are prohibited from making contact (including phone, electronic or written correspondence) with a student-athlete at another NCAA or NAIA four-year institution without first receiving written permission ("Permission to Contact") from the first institution's athletics director or his/her designee.
Evaluations
An evaluation is any off-campus activity designed to assess the academic qualifications or athletics ability of a prospective student-athlete, during which no contact occurs, including but not limited to:
- Watching a prospect practice, compete, or lift weights
- Meeting with a prospect's high school counselor to review or collect transcripts
- Talking to a prospect's high school/junior college coach or instructor at the prospect's educational institution
