In sports other than football and basketball, it is permissible for a team to employ a volunteer coach. All volunteer coaches must be cleared by the Office of Athletic Compliance before engaging in any team-related activities.
Volunteer Coaches May:
- Work for Rutgers outside the athletic department provided:
- The compensation received for those duties is commensurate with that received by others performing those same or similar duties;
- The time devoted to those duties is consistent with the time devoted by others receiving commensurate compensation for the same or similar assignments; and
- Volunteer coach is qualified for and is performing the duties for which he/she is compensated.
- Receive complimentary meals/entertainment only if they are incidental to organized team activities (e.g., pre- or post- game meals, occasional meals, unofficial and official visits).
- Receive housing and transportation expenses and benefits only during away-from-home contests.
- Receive a maximum of two complimentary tickets to home athletics contests in the sport he/she coaches.
- Receive apparel that is incidental to coaching (i.e., shoes, shirts and/or jackets).
- Receive the same awards as student-athletes for participation in championship events.
- Receive camp compensation from either the athletics department or an outside organization, provided all outside camp employment is preapproved by the Office of Athletic Compliance and the camp is operated in compliance with NCAA rules and regulations.
Volunteer Coaches May NOT:
- Coach or be involved in the same sport at a high school.
- Provide lessons to prospects, unless under a permissible NCAA tryout exception.
- Contact or evaluate prospective student-athletes off campus.
- "Like" or comment on a prospect's Facebook wall prior to the prospect signing a NLI, financial aid agreement, or our institution receiving a financial deposit in response to an offer of admission.
- Place telephone calls and text messages (and all other forms of electronic correspondence) to prospective student-athletes (or their parents, legal guardians or their coaches).
- Receive any on- or off-campus meals during unofficial visits.
