R YEAR IN REVIEW
TEAM NOTABLES
Rutgers finished 60th in the final Learfield Director's Cup standings for the 2020-21 academic year, the second-best finish in school history and a 22-spot jump from the 2018-19 academic year (there was no competition last year due to the pandemic). The Scarlet Knights' best-ever finish was 54th in 2006-07, when football's breakout season, including the program's first-ever bowl victory and the women's basketball team's run to the NCAA championship game powered the athletics department.
The Scarlet Knights posted their best conference winning percentage since joining the Big Ten in 2014. Rutgers had eight programs ranked during the 2020-21 competition season, six teams advance to NCAA postseason play and four Scarlet Knights advance to individual competition in their respective NCAA Championships.
BASEBALL
BASEBALL earned their best placement and winning percentage in Big Ten play since joining the conference. The Scarlet Knights earned six series wins, a 7-5 record against the three NCAA Regional qualifiers and the most road victories in the league. RU had a stretch of five-straight wins over ranked opponents, capped by an away sweep at Big Ten champion Nebraska. The offense blasted 48 homers, the sixth-most in a season in school history, and the pitching staff reached top-10 program marks in strikeouts and least walks allowed. In addition, Rutgers collected seven Big Ten weekly awards to match the number garnered the previous six years in the conference combined, including six freshman of the week honors for the most by a Big Ten team since 2013.
SOFTBALL
SOFTBALL played a full Big Ten schedule featuring series with three teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament with a young squad featuring 18 Scarlet Knights playing their first full Big Ten schedule. The Scarlet Knights also hosted games on its newly renovated RU Softball Complex. The upgrades included an all-weather turf with additional improvements including updated bullpens along with new fencing and backstop Fifth-year senior Anyssa Iliopoulos finished her career ranked fourth all-time in home runs having blasted 26 home runs while “On The Banks”.
FIELD HOCKEY
FIELD HOCKEY was among the top teams in the nation this season, ranking in the top-12 of the national polls all season long, finishing at no. 7 in the country. The Scarlet Knights earned four ranked wins, all victories over teams ranked in the top-10, as they twice defeated No. 9 Penn State and No. 4 Northwestern. The accomplishment included setting the program's modern-era record for highest ranked win over the 4th ranked Wildcats. Rutgers also went undefeated at home for the first time since 1976.
FOOTBALL
FOOTBALL matched the program high with three Big Ten victories and finished with its most competitive scoring differential in Big Ten play since joining the conference. The three wins away from Piscataway were the most conference road wins since joining the Big Ten in 2014 after combining for three road victories in the previous six seasons. Two of the wins came when trailing at halftime, as the team only had two such comeback Big Ten wins in its previous six seasons in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights had 14 players recognized in the All-Big Ten voting, the most for the program since joining the league, including four on the top-three teams in 2020 after totaling six combined the previous six years in the Big Ten and two over the last four seasons.
GYMNASTICS
GYMNASTICS produced their highest ever finish and score at the Big Ten Championships, two NCAA Regional qualifiers, a National qualifier, two First Team All-Big Ten honorees, and 14 Academic All-Big Ten recipients. Hannah Joyner made history for the program, becoming the first Scarlet Knight to eclipse 9.9 in all four events, matching the program record of 9.950 on beam, and advancing to Nationals as the third individual qualifier and first on beam for Rutgers.
BASKETBALL
MEN'S BASKETBALL had a historic season, culminating in the team's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1991. The Scarlet Knights defeated No. 7 seed Clemson for the team's first NCAA Tournament victory in 38 years, dating back to 1983. Rutgers has had back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1990-91 and 1991-92 and won double-digit conference games in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1989-90 and 1990-91. The Scarlet Knights went 16-12 overall and spent 11 weeks nationally ranked or receiving votes in the AP Poll, peaking at No. 11 in the nation.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL finished third in the Big Ten for the second time in three seasons and made its 26th appearance in the NCAA Tournament with its highest seed (6) since 2012. Rutgers finished 14-6 overall and ranked as high as No. 19 in the AP Poll producing a nine-game Big Ten winning streak, the program's longest in conference play since the 2005-06 team went 16-0 in the Big East. RU's trademark defense was ranked No. 1 in the Big Ten, while the offense's 75.1 points per game was the highest during the C. Vivian Stringer era at Rutgers and the team's .467 field goal percentage was the highest in a season since 1998-99. Additionally, the Scarlet Knights ranked fourth nationally with 12.6 steals per game.

Junior Maeve Rossi also produced the second-lowest 54-hole individual scorecard (-4) at the River Landing Classic, while sophomore Anna-Maria Diederichs earned Big Ten Golfer of the Week accolades after she tied for 11th on March 24 at the Pinetree Invitational in Kennesaw, Georgia. The Scarlet Knights finished 9-4, defeating five ranked teams during the season including three top-10 wins. RU also set program records with seven All-Americans and six All-Big Ten selections.

BIG TEN POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
Rutgers seniors Justin Davidovicz (football) and Sophia Catuogno (rowing) were the 2021 recipients of the Big Postgraduate Scholarship.
Each year, two student-athletes competing in intercollegiate athletics from each of the 14 Big Ten institutions planning to continue their education at a graduate degree program are each awarded a $7,500 scholarship. Students must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intend to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.
Davidovicz, an applied science engineering major, appeared in 42 career games handling the placekicking and kickoff duties for Rutgers football. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, he was named to the 2020 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar list. Davidovicz converted on 20 of 26 field goals, including a career-long 52 yarder and was a perfect 35-for-35 on extra points. The Bridgewater, New Jersey native will pursue graduate work in packaging engineering, a field Davidovicz has already excelled in working for Johnson & Johnson in 2020, when he evaluated passive temperature control shipping solutions for the company's COVID-19 vaccine. Davidovicz will earn a master's degree in supply chain management.
Catuogno is a member of the women's rowing Second Varsity 8 boat that qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2019, and followed the effort up in 2021 with multiple victories over other nationally ranked crews, including No. 6 Michigan, No. 9 Syracuse, No. 12 Indiana, and No. 18 Washington State. Catuogno is a College Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athlete, a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and has been inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma national college athlete honors society while studying chemical and biochemical engineering at Rutgers. The Freehold, New Jersey native will enter a masters program in chemical and biomedical engineering at Rutgers, where she has also served as a READI (Rutgers Educational and Athletic Development Initiative) engineering field leader and mentor.
