SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Rutgers baseball came within one strike of a victory, but Seton Hall rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie it and scored another in the 10th to steal a 7-6 win Tuesday at Owen T. Carroll Field. The loss snapped the Scarlet Knights' three-game winning streak.
Senior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) reached three more times on two singles and a walk, increasing his on-base percentage to .541. From the nine spot in the order, junior Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) had two RBI hits, while fifth-year senior Chris Suseck (Flemington, N.J.) also brought in two.
On the mound, sophomore John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.) left in line to win with two runs surrendered over five innings. The right-hander struck out four in the 75-pitch outing. Junior Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) came out of the bullpen and pitched a career-high 3.2 innings, stranding five runners between the seventh and the eighth.
The game featured two of the top seven base-stealing teams in the country, with Rutgers take the edge in that category by swiping five in as many tries. Devish threw out the only attempt by the hosts. In addition, RU committed no errors compared for five charged to SHU.
The Scarlet Knights (14-17) quickly dented the scoreboard with a run in the top of the first. Devish and junior Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) both singled to put runners at the corners with no outs. Next up, Suseck knocked in Devish with an RBI fielder's choice. However, Seton Hall (23-10) responded with two runs on two hits to take a 2-1 lead after the first.
O'Reilly came back with a perfect second and RU scratched across a run to even the game at two. Devish sparked the inning again, this time reaching on a single to right-center on an 0-2 count, moving up on an error in the outfield. He would then advance to third on a wild pitch when Carter drew ball four. In the next at bat, Carter broke to steal second, as the pitch went astray to allow Devish to run home.
SHU threatened with two on the fourth, but O'Reilly picked up his third strikeout of the inning to quell the rally. Then in the fifth, RU scored two to regain the lead. Sophomore Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.) laced a ball to center to start that was misplayed, as he ran all the way to third on the error. Rosa came up next and check-swinged an RBI single that fell inside the right field line. Devish advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt, with Suseck coming through with a two-out run-scoring single two batters later to make it 4-2.
In the bottom of seventh, Campbell faced bases loaded with one out, but picked up two strikeouts to escape unscathed.
Then in the ninth, Rutgers added two runs to go up 6-2. Freshman Mike Martinez (West New York, N.J.) reached on error as a pinch hitter with one out and scored when Freeman also reached via a misplay. Next up, Rosa slashed a single through the left side to add another run. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Pirates batted around and scored four runs with two outs to tie the game. The inning included three walks and three singles, with RU having two strikes on three different batters with a chance to end it.
Redshirt junior Max Herrmann (Rutherford, N.J.) (0-1) was able to move the game to extra innings, but Ryan Ramiz hit an infield single with two outs and the bases loaded to give Seton Hall the win. Zach Schellenger (2-2) earned the win as one of eight SHU pitchers.
The Scarlet Knights will look to rebound in the second part of the home-and-home set scheduled for Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Bainton Field. BTN Plus and WRSU 88.7-FM will have the broadcast.
