Baseball Drops Middle Game at Ohio State

April 16, 2016

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Rutgers baseball came back from an early deficit, but Ohio State responded with eight unanswered runs to eventually win 11-3 Saturday at Bill Davis Stadium. The result ties the series, as the Scarlet Knights earned a 7-4 Friday victory.

The Buckeyes (22-12-1, 3-5) jumped ahead with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second, but the Scarlet Knights (16-18, 3-5) quickly matched that in the top of the third. Junior Christian Campbell (Sayreville, N.J.) laid down a bunt single to start, but was forced on a grounder hit by sophomore Milo Freeman (Millburn, N.J.). Junior Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) then hit a ball back to the pitcher in the next at bat that was misplayed in the middle infield to give RU an extra chance. Following an out, junior Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) laced a two-run single to left to tie the game.

However, Nick Sergakis hit a two-run homer in the third to give Ohio State a lead it would not surrender. The offensive support backed a win for John Havird (3-1), who allowed three hits and no earned runs in a seven-inning start.

In the eighth, freshman Luke Bowerbank (Bernardsville, N.J.) drove in Freeman on a sacrifice fly. Freshman Jawuan Harris (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) tripled to join Campbell, Carter and Freeman with hits during the game.

Redshirt junior Kevin Baxter (Waterford, N.J.) pitched three innings out of the bullpen with one earned run allowed, while freshman Dante Scafidi (Washington Township, N.J.) collected five outs in relief. Redshirt junior Kyle Driscoll (Toms River, N.J.) (3-4) suffered his first loss in three starts.

Rutgers will look to earn its second Big Ten series win of the season in the rubber game against OSU Sunday at 1 p.m. Sophomore John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.) will make the start on the mound for the Scarlet Knights.
