PISCATAWAY, N.J. - In the middle game of a weekend series, Rutgers baseball took an 8-1 loss against Nebraska Saturday at Bainton Field. The series is now tied at one after the Scarlet Knights picked up a 3-2 Friday win.
Freshman Luke Bowerbank (Bernardsville, N.J.) and sophomore Kyle Walker (Piscataway, N.J.) led the RU bats with two singles each, as the team totaled 11 hits. Six other players recorded a single.
Nebraska (27-16, 8-6) broke scoreless tie with five runs on five hits in the top of the fifth. Four of the runs plated with two outs. The Cornhuskers tacked on two in the sixth to go up seven.
Rutgers (22-21, 6-8) dented the scoreboard with one in the bottom of the sixth. Bowerbank and senior R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) both singled to start the inning. After a double play, junior Tom Marcinczyk (Middlesex, N.J.) connected for an RBI hit through the right side. He leads the team with 38 runs knocked in this season.
On the mound, starter Matt Waldron (5-1) picked up the win for the visitors with one run allowed in six innings. He struck out four in the 77-pitch outing. Coming out of the bullpen, Robbie Palkert registered a three-inning save. Sophomore John O'Reilly (Northvale, N.J.) (0-4) took the loss with five runs allowed in the fifth. Senior Reed Shuttle (Lansdale, Pa.), junior Colin Bohnert (West Caldwell, N.J.) and redshirt junior Kevin Baxter (Waterford, N.J.) all made relief appearances for the Scarlet Knights.
