No. 20 Field Hockey Defeats No. 12 Stanford in OT, 2-1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 20 Rutgers field hockey earned the highest ranked victory in program history Saturday afternoon at a neutral site in Ocker Field, defeating No. 12 Stanford 2-1 in overtime. Daphne Groothuis scored the game-winning goal in overtime for the Scarlet Knights, who improve to 8-5 on the season.
Linde van Schaik also scored for RU, who dropped the Cardinal to 7-4 on the year. Gianna Glatz made seven saves in the victory. Rutgers outshot Stanford 16-12 on the game.
"The team showed a lot of character to come back from a tough loss and have this performance against Stanford," head coach Meredith Civico said. :I'm proud of our response and our effort. We played with grit and we played for each other. Every single player really gave their all for the team in this game."
The Cardinal scored first in the game, just over four minutes into the ballgame. After a penalty corner, a redirection by Marissa Cicione gave Stanford an early edge.
Late in the first half, the Scarlet Knights equalized, also capitalizing off a penalty corner. Linde van Schaik inserted the ball, then took a feed from Daphne Groothuis at the left post and finished for her seventh goal of the season.
The second half was evenly paced throughout, holding as a 1-1 tie. Rutgers had two late chances to score, but shots from Groothuis and Kerrie Burns in the final six minutes were saved and the game went into extra time. Through regulation, Rutgers led 13-11 in shots.
The Scarlet Knights entered overtime for the first time on the season. 11 minutes into the extra session, the team earned a penalty corner. Off a rebound, Groothuis put the ball home to give Rutgers the win.
With the victory, RU leads the all-time series 3-2. Groothuis had a goal and an assist on the day, giving her seven goals and six assists on the year. Rutgers now has wins over three ranked opponents on the year (No. 12 Stanford, No. 19 Iowa and No. 23 Old Dominion). Prior to this season, Rutgers only had three ranked wins all-time.
The Scarlet Knights' next game comes Friday at Michigan State, a 4 p.m. contest that will be televised by the Big Ten Network. The team returns home Sunday to host Ohio State.
