Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Earns 1-0 Shutout Win at Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.  –Freshman Daphne Groothuis scored the lone goal of the game late in the second half as Rutgers field hockey shut out the University of Pennsylvania in a 1-0 win on Friday afternoon.

"Today's win was a total team effort," head coach Meredith Civico said. "The team settled into the game and really took control during the second half. I know we are taking quite a bit from this win as we move forward into Sunday's match."

The game was even throughout the first half, remaining scoreless through the intermission. Emily Howarth recorded the team's first defensive save of the season to help keep the Quakers off the board.

With just over 12 minutes remaining in the second stanza, Rutgers earned a penalty corner. Junior Linde van Schaik inserted the ball to sophomore Alanna Gollotto, who slid a pass across to Groothuis. The Netherlands native made a move to get through two defenders and fired in a shot between the visiting goalkeeper's legs for the only goal of the game.

Freshman Gianna Glatz stood tall in goal for Rutgers for her first solo shutout of the season, making three saves. Rutgers outshot Penn 10-8, as the team took command in the second half to not allow the Quakers a shot.

The Scarlet Knights will remain on the road this weekend. Sunday the team has a neutral site matchup against No. 23 Old Dominion, which will be contested in College Park, Md.
