PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – No. 22 Rutgers field hockey took a 3-1 loss at Saint Joseph's (4-2) on Sunday afternoon. The two squads were tied at 1-1 after Katie Larmour goal 12 minutes in. However, it was the Hawks who added two second half goals, including one into an empty net, to drop the Scarlet Knights to 4-2 on the season.
"Today I didn't feel that we had the necessary intensity and focus," head coach Meredith Civico said. "St. Joes fought hard and we didn't make the adjustments we needed to get the outcome. I think the team recognizes what our strengths are and what we're good at. If we stick to that style of hockey, we know that we can get positive results."
St. Joe's outshot the Scarlet Knights 12-9 on the game, including 10-7 in the second half. Rutgers held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners, all of them coming in the final stanza. Gianna Glatz made two saves in goal for RU.
St. Joe's got on the board first, scoring on their first shot of the game six minutes in. Pepa Serrano sent a long ball, and Anna Willocks tipped it in for the score.
Rutgers had a quick answer, scoring on what was their first shot of the game as well, coming 12 minutes in. Katie Larmour fired a shot past the goalkeeper to even the score at 1-1.
In the second half, St. Joe's pulled back in front. Quinn Maguire's initial shot was saves, put she put home her own rebound to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead 15 minutes into the second stanza.
The Scarlet Knights pushed back, looking for the equalizer. The team earned three penalty corners in the final ten minutes, but was unable to convert any into a goal.
In the waning minutes, RU pulled its goalkeeper to press for a score. Off a penalty corner, St. Joe's made a save, and then Maguire sent her second goal of the game into an empty net at the other end for the 3-1 final margin.
Rutgers will take a trip to upstate New York next weekend, starting with a matchup Friday against unbeaten Cornell at 5 p.m. They will also face No. 5 Syracuse on Sunday.
