ITHACA, N.Y. – No. 24 Rutgers field hockey earned a road win Friday evening, dealing Cornell its first loss of the season with a 2-1 victory. Junior captain Linde van Schaik scored two first half goals for RU (5-2) to help extinguish the Big Red.
"The team worked incredibly hard today to secure the win," head coach Meredith Civico said. "Cornell played a good game but we were able to manage them and I'm proud that we stayed strong as a team to limit their opportunities. We still have plenty of room for growth, but now we can move on and prepare for another big game on Sunday against Syracuse."
Rutgers outshot Cornell 12-6, including a 9-1 margin in the first half. RU also held a 2-1 advantage in penalty corners. Freshman goalkeeper Gianna Glatz recorded one save to earn her fifth win of the season.
Rutgers got the first goal of the game 18 minutes into the contest, with an excellent finish on a penalty corner. Linde van Schaik inserted the ball short to Austyn Cuneo, who fed a pass back to van Schaik at the right post. Van Schaik slammed the ball home to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Twelve minutes later, another strike by van Schaik put Rutgers in front 2-0. After a foul and a quick restart, Katie Larmour slid the ball to van Schaik just inside the top of the circle. She launched a rocket shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the opening half. The Scarlet Knights controlled play throughout the opening half, taking that 2-0 lead into halftime.
Halfway through the second half, Cornell cut the lead in half. Kristen Pienaar took a shot from in front that recorded the home team's first goal of the day and cut Rutgers' lead to 2-1.
RU's defense held strong throughout the remainder of the half, pushing the play forward and preventing the Big Red from equalizing. The visitors held on to that 2-1 margin for the victory.
The Scarlet Knights will remain in upstate New York for a Sunday contest. The Scarlet Knights will face No. 3 Syracuse at 2 p.m. Sunday. That game can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
