#12 Women's Soccer Posts Ninth Straight Shutout in Draw at Northwestern
Sep 22 | Women's Soccer
EVANSTON, ILL. – No. 12 Rutgers women's soccer registered its ninth straight shutout in a 0-0 double overtime draw at Northwestern on Friday night. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Casey Murphy registered five saves in net to post the clean sheet.
"Every time I walk out on the field I know my teammates are giving 100 percent. Tonight was no different," said senior midfilelder Christy Monroy. "We didn't get the result we wanted, but we had some good moments we can build on and some learning moments we can use to prepare us to move forward. The focus tonight is to recover from a tough match and mentally prepare for Sunday. Every game has a new plan and we will spend the next two days refocusing on our next opponent."
RU moved to an overall record of 7-0-2 and a conference mark of 1-0-1, while NU moved to 4-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in league action.
Despite sophomore midfielder Taylor Aylmer firing off three early shots within the first 20 minutes of the match, the Scarlet Knights were unable to find the back of the net in the first half. Defensively, RU would hold off the Wildcats, as Murphy backed the team with two saves to keep the score 0-0 at halftime.
The stalemate continued throughout the second half. A tremendous stop by Murphy in the 77th minute denied an NU shot, as she punched the ball over the top bar to keep the game scoreless. By the end of the second period, Murphy had registered five saves in net to help send the game into overtime.
The battle between defenses held strong as no shots were allowed for either side in the first overtime period. Although Rutgers outshoot Northwestern, 2-1, in the second overtime, the game would ultimately end in a draw.
With the shutout, RU matched its program best streak, which included nine straight shutouts to open 2015.
Up next, Rutgers remains on the road with a trip to Illinois on Sunday. Match time is set for 2 p.m. ET in Champaign.
