Senior produces two of six victories against Brown competition
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 23, 2017) – Rutgers tennis recorded six more victories on Day 2 of the Brown Invitational, led by senior Mingxiu Du winning both singles and doubles matches against the Bears on their home court.
Playing in a dual match mirror style tournament, the Scarlet Knights face off in tournament matches against Brown, UMass and Stony Brook throughout the weekend. Rutgers was 4-4 in singles action and 2-2 in the doubles pairings against Brown competition on Saturday.
"It was a really good day for us," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "We showed a lot of confidence and pure guts to win the important points today. The final day is always demanding, but we are very fit and I'm excited to see how we compete against UMass tomorrow."
Du won her first singles match of the season with a touch of vengeance against Brown's Alyza Benotto. With Du's 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory on Saturday, she avenged a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 loss to Benotto at last years' Brown Invitational. In doubles competition, Du teamed with sophomore Jaci Cochrane to win a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4), in the No. 2 position.
That was one of two thrilling doubles victories for the Scarlet Knights on Day 2, as senior classmates Lee Levy and Chloe Lee were victorious at No. 3 by a 7-6 (7-3) score.
Freshman Maya Jacobs starts her collegiate career with a 2-0 singles record following a 6-4, 6-1 win over Brown's Katie Ta at No. 4. Sophomore Kat Muzik joins Jacobs at 2-0 with her convincing 6-0, 6-4 defeat of the Bears' Maddie Stearns at the No. 3 position.
Freshman Kat Rosenberger rounded out Rutgers' wins on Saturday with her first collegiate victory, and a hard-fought one at that. Rosenberger rebounded from a 6-2 loss in the first set to take the next two (6-4, 7-5) for the triumph.
The Scarlet Knights will finish out the Brown Invitational with matches against UMass on Sunday, Sept. 24.
