PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 23 Rutgers field hockey completed an unbeaten opening weekend on Sunday afternoon, downing No. 19 Iowa 1-0 on a goal from sophomore
Katie Larmour and a shutout by freshman goalkeeper
Gianna Glatz. The victory improved RU's record to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten.
"I'm really happy to get two Big Ten wins this weekend," head coach
Meredith Civico said. "Our one goal today was on an attack penalty corner, something we put a lot of work into during the week, and we executed it flawlessly. I was also really pleased with the way we played on the defensive side. We're a young team that is still learning and growing, but we are proving that we can compete with anyone in the Big Ten."
Rutgers scored the game's lone goal just ten minutes into the contest, tallying off a set play on a penalty corner.
Linde van Schaik inserted the ball to the stick stop off
Haley Meade. The captain played the ball to freshman
Daphne Groothuis, who sent a shot towards the back post.
Katie Larmour was perfectly positioned there to redirect the ball into the net for what would be the game's only tally.
The Scarlet Knights had to play fierce defense in the second half to preserve the lead, as Iowa outshot them 8-2 in the frame along with holding a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners in that frame. The game came down to an untimed penalty corner on the final play of the game. Once again, the RU defense held strong and preserved the shutout victory.
Gianna Glatz made four saves to earn her second consecutive shutout. Iowa lead 12-8 in shots on the day, but only had the four on target.
The Scarlet Knights next weekend are on the road for just one game. The team will play at No. 14 Northwestern on Friday at 4 p.m.
