No. 22 Field Hockey Falls at No. 12 Princeton
Sep 08 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 22 Rutgers field hockey took its first loss of the season at No. 12 Princeton on Friday, falling 4-1. Sophomore Nikki Santore scored the lone goal for the Scarlet Knights (4-1).
"Obviously we are disappointed with today's result," head coach Meredith Civico said. "Princeton played fast and finished their opportunities. We will take a lot from this match and look to rebound quickly for Sunday. I am very pleased with this teams approach and their mentality"
The Tigers outshout the Scarlet Knights 15-5 on the day. They also led 5-2 in penalty corners. Gianna Glatz made three saves for Rutgers.
Princeton got the first quality attempt on goal off a penalty corner, but the RU freshman goalkeeper Glatz made consecutive saves to keep them off the board. The Tigers would converted on their second corner attempt however. Just over 16 minutes into the half, a rebound attempt was flipped in to give the home squad a 1-0 lead.
With four minutes left in the opening stanza, Princeton added another tally. The initial shot was redirected in mid-air into the net for a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Princeton added two more goals. They finished in a loose ball seven minutes into the half, then converted on a penalty stroke for a four goal lead.
With 22 minutes left in the frame, Rutgers got their one goal. Katie Larmour carried the ball around the right side, then sent a pass in front, where Santore smacked it home for the score. However, the visitors were unable to score again and fell by the 4-1 margin.
Rutgers remains on the road for Sunday's contest at St. Joe's. That game will begin at 1 p.m.
