KENNESAW, Ga. (Feb. 24, 2018) – Rutgers softball (5-8) dropped both ends of its doubleheader on Saturday at the Bailey Memorial Tournament at Kennesaw State, falling to Florida A&M by a score of 4-3 and to Morehead State, 6-0.
Senior first baseman
Rebecca Hall went 4-for-4 with nine total bases against Florida A&M (5-10) on her third home run of the season, third triple and a pair of singles to go with two RBIs and two runs scored. Her clutch 25
th career homer came in the seventh inning with Rutgers down 4-2, and her two RBIs move her into a fourth-place tie all-time in career RBIs at RU with 113. Her triple also bumps the first baseman into sixth-place all-time with six career three-baggers.
Sophomore designated player
Nicole Bowman provided the other RBI in the fifth inning against A&M, while junior
Nicolette Anico picked up Rutgers' lone hit in the shutout setback against Morehead State (8-3).
Playing from behind all day, Rutgers relied on a solid bullpen to stay close in games. Freshman
Bianca Vozenilek pitched three frames without an earned run against FAMU, while sophomore
Cambria Keefer kept the final 1.2 innings scoreless as the offense's comeback attempt fell just short. Freshman
Taylor Manno hurled the final 3.2 innings against Morehead State, allowing a hit and an earned run with two strikeouts.
HALL'S NINE BASES NOT ENOUGH IN 4-3 LOSS TO FLORIDA A&M
The Rattlers jumped ahead with a three-run second inning on three hits and an error, forcing Rutgers to chase. Vozenilek came on in relief for three innings without allowing an earned run to give the Scarlet Knights the chance to keep it close.
Hall chipped away at the lead with her second triple in as many days with one out in the top of the fifth, sending junior
Jess Hughes all the way home from first base following her walk. With Hall just 60 feet away from home, Bowman followed with a hard-hit single to right field to make it 3-2 in favor of Florida A&M.
The Rattlers answered with a couple of singles in the bottom half of the fifth, but it was a defensive miscue that allowed them to take the 4-2 lead. Sophomore pitcher
Cambria Keefer entered the circle with one out and promptly recorded a strikeout-groundout combo to keep the deficit at two runs.
Hall's third home run of the season was a solo shot to dead center to bring Rutgers within one run, but the Rattlers escaped with the final two outs.
RAIN ON THE WAY
The Scarlet Knights are tentatively scheduled for another game against Morehead State on Sunday at 10 a.m., but the Kennesaw area is expecting significant rainfall all day on Sunday. Updates will be posted to ScarletKnights.com and @RUsoftball on twitter.
