Scaife Added To Wade Trophy Watch List
Feb 08 | Women's Basketball
ATLANTA — Rutgers redshirt senior guard Tyler Scaife was added to the "Wade Watch" list of candidates for the 2018 Wade Trophy, it was announced on Thursday by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Scaife lands on her third "watch list" of the year having been named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List, which recognizes the top shooting guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball, and the Dawn Staley Award Watch List, which recognizes the most outstanding collegiate guard in the nation.
The Wade Trophy — now in its 41st year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.
After missing last season for medical reasons, Scaife has powered back to lead Rutgers at 19.2 points per game in helping the Scarlet Knights to one of the largest turnarounds in the country. She has amassed 2,092 career points and is 120 points shy of surpassing RU great Cappie Pondexter to become RU's second all-time leading scorer. Ranking sixth among Big Ten scorers and the nation's seventh active leading scorer, Scaife has notched 14 20+ scoring efforts and matched her career-high with 29 points twice this season. Nationally, Scaife has put her name seventh in field goals made (189) and eighth in field goals attempted (422).
The WBCA will announce the four finalists for the honor in mid-March. The winner of the 2018 Wade Trophy will be announced during ESPN2's telecast of the 2018 NCAA® Women's Final Four® national semifinal games on March 30.
