PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball suffered a 12-3 setback to Iona Tuesday at Bainton Field. The game was called due to darkness after eight innings.
Â
Sophomore
Kevin Welsh led the lineup with a 3-for-3 afternoon, while both fifth-year senior
Chris Folinusz and junior
Carmen Sclafani had a pair of hits. Overall, the Scarlet Knights totaled 10 hits to reach double digits for the sixth time this season, but went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position compared to a 6-for-12 output from the Gaels.
Â
On the mound, freshman
Collin Kiernan (0-1) stepped in to make his first collegiate start and began the outing with two scoreless frames before inherited runners came across after exiting. Sophomore
Tevin Murray matched his career high with 1.2 innings out of the bullpen, while redshirt sophomore
Tommy Genuario logged 3.2 innings in his longest outing. Freshman
Jacob Kodrus also appeared and struck out one in his debut.
Â
The Scarlet Knights (5-6) jumped ahead early with one run in the bottom of the first. Redshirt freshman
Dan DiGeorgio boarded on an error and moved up on a single through the left side by junior
Nick Matera. Next up, Folinusz ripped an RBI single to right field to make it 1-0.
Â
The Gaels (3-7) came back with three in the third, with RU responding with one in the bottom half to make it a 3-2 game. Folinusz picked up his second hit of the day, advanced two bases on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by junior
Mike Martinez.
Â
However, Iona plated five in the fifth and four in the eighth to build a wider margin. The only other Rutgers run came in the seventh when DiGeorgio tripled and scored on an error. The second baseman leads the team with 12 runs scored this season.
Â
Patrick Ryan (1-2) earned the win for the visitors with four innings of relief.
Â
RU will next head back down to Florida to start a seven-game trip over spring break. It will start with a three-game series versus Army beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. in Fort Myers.
