PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The 2017-18 Rutgers women's basketball team gathered one more time on the eve of the WNBA Draft to celebrate the season and hand out the annual team awards.
Manager Nina Scott was honored with the Gianna DeVeitro Manager of the Year.
Freshman forward Mael Gilles was named the Scarlet Knights' Scholar Athlete for achieving the highest GPA on the squad, while redshirt senior guard Kathleen Fitzpatrick, one of four RU members on the Big Ten All-Academic Team, earned the Kevin Collins-Most Improved Academic Award and Sportsmanship Award. Junior center Desiree Keeling, meanwhile, was honored with the team's Spirit Award.
Junior guard Khadaizha Sanders, who was the Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree for the second-straight season, earned the Betnijah Laney Teammate of the Year Award.
Newcomer of the Year went to redshirt junior forward Stasha Carey. In her first season on the hardwood at Rutgers, Carey earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten from the media after posting a team-second best 7.5 points per game, a team-leading 6.8 rebounds per game and 1.9 steals per contest.
Graduate student guard Nigia Greene picked up Defensive Player of the Year honors. Greene was a key component in helping Rutgers limit the opposition and lead the Big Ten in scoring defense.
Most Valuable Player honors were bestowed on redshirt senior Tyler Scaife. Coming off a medical redshirt season, she led Rutgers with 19.4 points per game and become the Scarlet Knights' second all-time leading scorer with 2,233 career points. Scaife earned a host of awards and honors throughout the season, including being a member of the Wade Trophy, Dawn Staley and Ann Meyers Drysdale Watch Lists, a WBCA Regional All-American, First Team All-Big Ten by the coaches and media and featured by ESPNW's Top 10 Plays of the Week in December.
The Rutgers MVP will be setting her sights on the next level and awaits her name being called at the WNBA Draft 2018 presented by State Farm on Thursday, April 12. ESPN2 will air the first round beginning at 7 p.m., followed by coverage of rounds two and three on ESPNU at 8 p.m. ET. The draft will also stream live on the ESPN app.
