PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers baseball suffered a 6-1 loss to No. 13 Michigan in the rubber game of the series Sunday at Bainton Field. The Scarlet Knights fell to 24-20 on the season and 7-11 in the Big Ten.
Â
The Wolverines (29-14, 14-3) scored two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to jump ahead. RU scored once in the third when freshman
Mike Nyisztor came home on an RBI grounder from junior
Luke Bowerbank. However, that was all as Karl Kauffman (6-2) pitched seven innings for the win with only that run surrendered.
Â
Junior
Serafino Brito logged three scoreless innings late to keep the game within striking distance. The right-hander struck out three and permitted only one hit. Graduate student
Karl Blum (0-4) stranded four runners on base, but was charged with the loss.
Â
Offensively, redshirt junior
Dan DiGeorgio extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the sixth. He nearly connected for a three-run homer to make it a two-run game in the eighth, but Michigan right fielder Christian Bullock leaped over the fence to deny.
Â
The game did not include a hit from either side with a runner in scoring position, combining for 0-for-19.
Â
Following the action, Rutgers wrapped up its fundraiser for the Vs. Cancer Foundation. Check ScarletKnights.com on Monday for more information.
Â
The Scarlet Knights have no midweek games upcoming, next traveling to Maryland for a three-game series. The set starts Friday at 6:30 p.m. from College Park.
