Rutgers Drops Two Matches at ECAC Championships

After taking the doubles point, winning two of three matches, Cornell earned victories in all three singles matches to seal the win against the Scarlet Knights in its tournament opener on Saturday. Senior Jennifer Hellier (Annapolis, MD) lost her match at the No. 1 position to Akane Kokubo, 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 2 spot, junior Kaitlin Link (Toronto/Ontario, Canada) fell to Laura Tallent, 6-4, 6-5 (6). Junior Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) lost a tough three-set match to Erika Takeucki, 3-6, 6-1, 6-5 (3).
RU captured its lone victory in the Cornell match when the doubles team of Hellier and freshman Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) beat Tallent and Kate Sternberg at the No. 2 position, 8-5. At the No. 1 spot, Kokubo and Nicole Chiu defeated Weckstein and senior Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ), 8-7 (6). Link and freshman Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) lost their match at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
In Sunday’s match with GW, the Scarlet Knights took the doubles point, but the Colonials captured the victory by taking four of the six singles matches. Sommerlad defeated Sevla Gionca, 6-1, 6-2, to capture the win at the No. 4 spot. Balasa won at No. 5 singles, downing Samantha Fisher, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) lost to Estee Bartell, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 6 position. Playing at the No. 1 position, Hellier fell to Tracy Wei, 6-3, 6-5 (3). Link lost to Nazli Giencsoy, 6-4, 6-5 (3). George Washington’s Natasha Bode defeated Weckstein at the No. 3 singles spot, 6-0, 6-4.
Several members of the women’s team will compete in the ITA Regional Championships in Boston, MA, Fri.-Mon. Oct. 25-28.
